Improved Flavor for FLORID ORAL GEL (Therapeutic Agent for Oral and Esophageal Candidiasis) for Easy Administration

(Tokyo, September 15, 2004) - Mochida Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (President: Naoyuki Mochida) has improved the formulation of its Florid Oral Gel, a therapeutic agent for oral and esophageal candidiasis, for improved patient compliance. The new formulation is expected to be available to medical institutions in early October.

Oral candidiasis is an oral mucosal disease caused by candida, a kind of fungi. Candida is a normal inhabitant of even healthy subjects' mouths, yet can proliferate in the presence of reduced salivary secretion and/or compromised immunity, resulting in oral candidiasis.

Florid Oral Gel, with its principle component miconazole, is an antifungal agent approved for the indication of oral and esophageal candidiasis, and has been available since March 1993.

The gel form of Florid Oral Gel is pharmacologically highly effective, directly acting on localized parts with its high concentration. However, in some clinical settings, certain patients have complained about its administration due to the particularly strong, sweet flavor and stimulation inside the mouth, expressing a desire for a more convenient formulation.

In response to such requests, the product's usability has been remarkably improved by the new formulation change, with markedly less sweetness and stimulation inside the mouth.
